The reputation of chocolate being a junk food should be ascribed to the harmful effects of commercial processing, refining techniques, and the unhealthful ingredients typically added to manufacturers’ product. All chocolate is made from the cacao (cocoa) bean. Cacao, in its unprocessed, natural state has more antioxidant flavonoids than any other foods tested to date. All of Burdick Chocolate is made with high amounts of cacao solids and pure cocoa butter - without the use of additives and preservatives - making our chocolate a healthy snack!

We’ve mentioned that cacao is rich in antioxidant flavonoids - namely, flavonols. It is well documented that antioxidants promote cardiovascular health and help protect the body from free radicals - reducing the risk for certain cancers. Cacao is also high in essential minerals, including calcium, iron, zinc, sulfur and potassium. Cocoa butter contains heart-healthy, monounsaturated fats that raise the good cholesterol. More recent studies have determined that cocoa beans are a strong source of serotonin, dopamine, and phenylethylamine - neurotransmitters that reduce depression and stimulate brain health. Additionally, it is believed that cocoa beans support weight loss!

To receive the nutrients and health benefits of chocolate, you should choose product that is as close to its natural state as possible - Cocoa Beans and Cocoa Nibs are the best. Burdick’s Whole Roasted Cacoa Beans from Grenada, are coated with a mix of milk and dark chocolate., then seasoned with Trinidadian spices, then dusted with cocoa powder. Listed in the table below are some of the ORAC Values (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) of the various products blended with our new Healthy Bars. Ideally, you should get between 3,000 and 5,000 ORACs per day. Antioxidant rich foods generally have higher ORAC values. These values were reported by the USDA based on the serving size listed below.

When studying ORAC values, it’s not always best to consume large quantities of the food with the highest value. As shown in the table, Cocoa nibs scored much higher than Goji Berries. Where eating 100gms of goji berries is beneficial to your health, consuming the same amount of cocoa nibs is too much for your body in one day.
